2009 Nissan 370Z - Road Test

From minor but insistent Lamarckian enhancement does greatness accrue.*

*We once heard William F. Buckley Jr. say that, and it sounded cool.

At the Z car’s U.S. introduction 40 years ago, Datsun wisely chose not to employ its domestic “Fairlady” moniker, which Yutaka Katayama knew would have been tantamount to calling, say, the Corvette the “Cocker Spaniel.” Since then, the hyphen that originally separated the “240” from the “Z” has vanished, 1.3 extra liters of displacement have more than doubled the original engine’s output, an actor briefly made Mr. K a red-bespectacled TV star, and the car’s price has swollen by about $27,000.

Nissan refers to this latest Z as an “enhancement,” likely largely a male enhancement, rather than a whole new car. The company is being modest. The wheelbase is shorter by 3.9 inches, width is up 1.1 inches, length is down 2.7 inches. The larger engine (same V-6 as in the Infiniti G37) produces 332 horsepower, a bonus of 26, and it sits 15 millimeters closer to the pavement, which is now hugged by a true unequal-length control-arm front suspension. Although Nissan’s engineers had to add nearly 200 pounds of safety and regulatory bric-a-brac, the car is only 33 pounds heavier than the 350Z we tested in June of ’07, in part because the hatch, A-pillars, and doors are now aluminum. We know, because we attacked them with a “Big Sky” fridge magnet.

Nissan dealers to takeover abandoned Detroit display, Nissan to attend Chicago

Nissan dealers to takeover abandoned Detroit display, Nissan to attend Chicago

Nissan announced earlier this week that it will be yanking its display at the 2009 Detroit and Chicago Auto Shows to save money due to a sluggish automotive market. Well, Nissan dealers in metro-Detroit are taking matters into their own hands and have decided to takeover the Nissan and Infiniti display at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show when the show open in January.

“The ultimate, core purpose of auto shows is to create excitement among consumers and generate sales. That’s what we’re doing,” Doug Fox, co-chairman of the NAIAS and an Ann Arbor Nissan dealer, told Detroit Free Press.

Separately, Nissan of North America has announced that it plans on returning to the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

“After a careful review of this decision with our North Central Region management and our Chicago dealers, we have found a way to maintain a presence at the Chicago show through our dealers,” Nissan said in a statement.

How does the Nissan GT-R perform without launch control?

According to a recent rumor or speculation the 2010 Nissan GT-R will not have the launch-control found on the 2009 models. When we first heard of the news, we thought “how often does someone owning a Nissan GT-R actually use the launch control feature?”

The folks at Motor Trend contact Nissan’s PR for the official world and they said that no decision on removing launch-control has been made as of yet but the Japanese automaker is considering it. The PR department also cleared up some rumors about the warranty being automatically voided when one uses launch control. It seems that using launch control with or without VDC does not automatically void warranty coverage; however, abusing the features does. Nonetheless, it’s still a grey area how Nissan classifies ‘abuse.’

Okay enough about the warranty talk - how does the GT-R perform without launch control? Not that bad at all. Of course a 3.2 second from 0 to 60 mph is no longer possible but again how often will you actually be doing 0 to 60 mph runs. Check out Motor Trend’s numbers after the jump.

Nissan and Infiniti decide to pull out of Detroit Motor Show

Nissan Infiniti Detroit Motor Show

Things start to look really bad for the upcoming Detroit Motor Show. After last week Ferrari, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Suzuki and then Mitsubishi announced they won’t bring any cars to the show, today Nissan and Inifiniti also announced their decision to pull out of the motor show. The Japanese carmaker said that they’ve unveiled the 370Z and the new Cube at the LA Show and a presence in Detroit is not necessary at the moment, due to the “depressed economy”. They’ve also cancelled their appearance at the Chicago Motor Show, in February. So, more bad news for Detroit organizers and, considering there’s more than a month left until the show, we’re wondering if Nissan will be the last company to pull out of the show.

Nissan not attending 2009 Detroit Auto Show

Nissan not attending 2009 Detroit Auto Show

Nissan had a pretty strong presence at the 2008 LA Auto Show with two product launches including the new 2009 Nissan 370Z and the new 2009 Nissan Cube. However, joining a half-dozen others, Nissan has decided to pull out of the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. It has also announced that it will not be attending the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

Nissan says that the decision was made due to its tightened marketing budgets and since it has not major product launches planned during the time period of the two shows. Nissan says it feels that Detroit and Chicago aren’t the best place to put its marketing dollars given the current economic and market conditions.

Nissan is joined by other automakers including Mitsubishi, Rolls-Royce, Land Rover, Ferrari and Suzuki who have also withdrew their presence at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. We’re guessing the only reason GM is attending is because Detroit is its home town.

Preview: 2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster

Nissan recently unveiled its all-new 370Z Coupe, which is set to go on sale in January next year, and now we have a computer generated rendering of the Roadster model, which Nissan has previously stated will arrive on the market one year after the Coupe. In the first full redesign of the iconic Nissan Z since its re-introduction as a 2003 model, nearly every piece and component has been redesigned. This includes a shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, a new engine with more horsepower and improved fuel economy, a new seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, a world's first synchronized downshift rev-matching system for the manual transmission, and a greatly improved cabin. All these changes will make their way onto the Roadster model, which is also expected to carry over a similar automated folding soft-top to the current model. Under the hood will be the same 3.7L VQ37VHR V6, rated at 332hp (247kW) and 270lb-ft (366Nm) of torque. In keeping with the ‘affordable performance’ theme of its 350Z predecessor, Nissan will price the new 370Z Roadster only slightly above the Coupe, which in the United States will start at $29,930 (excluding destination charges).

Nissan GT-R still manages 3.9s 0-60 sans launch control

Nissan GT-R still manages 3.9s 0-60 sans launch control
Much noise has been made over the effect of the Nissan GT-R's hidden launch control feature, known to break transmissions and void warranties when abused. The Series II GT-R, due for 2010, won't even have the option to enable launch control, and so the tests to determine the GT-R's accelerative capabilities sans-aids have begun, with preliminary results showing a 0-60mph (96km/h) time of 3.9 seconds is within reach. While that's a far cry from the 3.2-second runs extracted from the hard-launching secret mode, the abuse to the car means that real-world owners won't often - or ever - see such numbers anyway.

Cherish your 2009 Nissan GT-R: 2010 model won’t have launch control

Nissan GT-R forums are bursting with angry stories of owners using launch control, breaking their transaxle and getting their warranties voided. Some have even refused to take delivery of the GT-R after realizing they would end up incurring the cost of the damage if they decided to use the launch control system.

Rumors have recently been floating around the web that the 2010 Nissan GT-R won’t have the launch control feature. So is it true? InsideLine spoke to three Nissan employees at the 2008 LA Auto Show - the first two confirmed that the removal of launch control was being considered.

However, the third Nissan member, a high-ranking executive, confirmed this removal. “It’s gone,” he said “We just don’t want to deal with the warranty nightmare anymore. It’ll make the 2009 GT-R really special. It’ll be the only R35 with launch control.”

We Just Lost It: 2010 Nissan GT-R To Lose Launch Control

I hate to be the bearer of bad news and I do not want to beat a dead GT-R horse but here goes…

Inside Line has confirmed with three contacts at Nissan that they plan to ship 2010 Nissan GT-R’s and newer models without the launch control feature. This may not be a surprise to many due to the hyped talk of the angry customers with broken transmissions and voided warranties. Pretty crazy if you ask me! Wonder what this will do to the 0-60 times… wow, maybe my car has a shot at beating the GT-R from a standstill.. HA, wishful thinking right?

The Inside Line quote:

“It’s gone,” he said when asked if launch control would return in 2010. “We just don’t want to deal with the warranty nightmare anymore. It’ll make the 2009 GT-R really special. It’ll be the only R35 with launch control.”

Do you think this is such a good idea??? I know I would have used Launch Control if I owned a new GT-R!!! How about you?

Renault/Nissan CEO Ghosn supports Detroit 3 bailout

During his speech at the 2008 LA Auto Show, Renault/Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said he supports aid for automakers by world governments including a U.S. government bailout of the Detroit Big 3. Ghosn said that he is no longer interested in any mergers or expanding its product sharing with company’s like Chrysler due to his company’s tight credit condition.

“The likelihood of some companies going bankrupt in 2009 is very high,” he said. “The year looks really bad.”

Ghosn said that governments should provide financial aid to struggling automakers to help them come out of their current conditions and build more fuel-efficient vehicles.

“If we want to transform this industry, in a radical way, we are going to need a lot of investment. You cannot take an existing car and retrofit it and say, ‘It’s electric.’ You have to start from zero,” Ghosn said.

Renault-Nissan still looking for U.S. alliance, supports Detroit 3 bailout

Speaking at the Los Angeles Auto Show today, the boss of Renault-Nissan Carlos Ghosn has reaffirmed his company’s need for a “full North American partner” and pledged support for more federal aid for the Detroit 3 as a way to fuel growth in the industry. While Renault-Nissan is hopeful of one day forming an alliance with one of the Detroit 3 carmakers, Ghosn stressed that now was not the time but the move is still an important one. “No alliances, acquisitions or mergers can take place in the automobile industry, or really any industry for that matter, until the storm in the economy is gone,” he explained. Of the three Detroit carmakers, Ghosn confirmed that Chrysler was the most attractive option, reports the Associated Press.

2010 Nissan Cube - Auto Shows

Two generations of the Nissan Cube have been sold in Japan since 1998, and now it’s our turn to get in on the fun with this third-gen car, which debuts at the L.A. auto show. Yes, we’re glad that the nameplate is headed for America—we’ve been especially jonesing since we drove the last-gen Cube—but now that it’s here, we’re a little disappointed in the styling; it’s not as pleasing to our eyes as the previous Japan-only version.

Sure, all of the funky features are there—including the wraparound right-rear window; the theater-style, sliding second-row seat; and the refrigerator-esque rear door that opens to a cavernous interior—but something has been lost. The beveled treatment around the windows has been exaggerated to cartoonish levels, and the slab-sided looks are now interrupted by puffed-up fender flares and bulbous front and rear bumpers. The design has been altered almost to the point where it’s no longer, well, cubic.

Objectively, the Cube has grown up in its third generation, increasing in every dimension except height, with the largest increase being nearly 10 inches added to its length. Wheelbase increases by nearly 5 inches over the last-gen Cube.

LA 2008 Live: 2009 Nissan 370Z pricing announced

Nissan has officially taken the covers off of the new 2009 Nissan 370Z - the first full redesign of the Nissan Z since its introduction in 2003. We already know that power will come from a 3.7L VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) that makes 332-hp with a maximum torque of 270 lb-ft.

What we learned today from the live reveal of the 370Z is that the engine will be available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and a 7-speed automatic with paddle shifters as an option. Estimated fuel-economy for the 2009 Nissan 370Z come in at 18/26 mpg (city/highway) for both the 7-speed automatic and the 6-speed manual.

How much will all this cost you? Nissan said that the 2009 370Z will hit North American dealerships in January 2009 with prices starting at $29,930. Nissan will be offering the 370Z in just two trim-levels including 370Z and the 370Z Touring which adds heated leather-seats, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, Bluetooth, 8-speaker Bose audio system, XM Satellite Radio, cargo cover and aluminum pedals.

Two option packages will be offered including the Sport Package and the Navigation Package. Sport Package adds 19-inch RAYS forged wheels and Bridgestone Potenza tires, aerodynamic front and rear spoiler, larger Nissan Sport Brakes, SynchroRev Match and Viscous Limited Slip Differential. The Navigation Package adds a hard drive-based navigation system, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive and iPod connectivity.

LA 2008 Live: 2009 Nissan Cube gets 30 mpg on the highway

Earlier this morning we saw the first images of the new 2009 Nissan Cube. Nissan has now unveiled the new compact Cube here at the 2008 LA Auto Show and has announced a U.S. debut for spring 2009. Pricing details will be announced closer to launch.

The 2009 Nissan Cube may be small with a wheelbase of just 156.7 inches but provides comfortable seating for 5-passengers. The Cube seating includes a 6-way manual driver’s seat and a 4-way manual passenger seat. The back seat passengers get what’s called a “lounge sofa” style sliding rear bench seat.

Power for the 2009 Nissan Cube comes from a 1.8L DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 122-hp with a maximum torque of 127 lb-ft. Mated to the Nissan Xtronic CVT transmission, the Cube gets a projected fuel-economy of 30 mpg on the highway. The Cube will also be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Upon launch, Nissan will offer the 2009 Cube with three different trim-levels including Cube 1.8, Cube 1.8
S and Cube 1.8 SL. All models will be available in eight exterior colors including: Chrome Silver, Steel Grey, Bitter Chocolate, Scarlet Red, Caribbean Blue, Moss Green, Super Black and White Pearl.

2009 Nissan Cube Set For Spring U.S. Debut; New
Entry-Level Compact Combines Fashion With Functionality

– Small But Substantial, Spirited But Economical, All-New Third Generation Cube’s
Asymmetrical Design and Lounge-Style Interior Provide Unexpected Charm and Utility –

Huey Lewis once sang “It’s hip to be square.” Few believed him. Mathletes wax
poetic about the superior geometric efficiencies of a cube in terms of volume v.
surface area. And get little respect. Cavemen discovered that a round stone rolls
better than a square one. And, as a consequence, gave birth to the traffic jam. In
1998, Nissan introduced the original Cube, an aptly named box-on-wheels, to minor
consumer interest. Perhaps, like homo erectus, the Cube was simply ahead of its
time.

But times change, and so did the Cube. In 2002, an all-new second generation
Nissan Cube was introduced in the Japanese market. More spacious inside, more
glass outside, more power under the hood and, more importantly, a few more angles
and curved surface details added to its compact, slab-sided exterior.

Quintessentially Japanese, this new Cube took Tokyo by storm. A pocket-sized funand-
function cocktail mixing the charm of Godzilla and the wit of Mothra, buyers
were smitten. And so, it turns out, Huey was right after all.
Like the Nissan GT-R before it, the Nissan Cube soon found an audience outside of
Japan – not in person, but through its exposure in fashion and automotive
magazines, videos and on the Web.

Reboot to today, more than 10 years since its original appearance, and the Nissan
Cube is ready to meet the world in person, coming to America in spring 2009 in an
all-new, dramatically rethought third generation design that is clever, quirky, witty,
fun and uniquely functional. And still totally square.

More than just unique geometry, however, the new 2009 Nissan Cube is also
conceived as a totally different take on an automobile – a car that doesn’t want to be
defined as car. “With its unique blend of fashion and function, Cube imagines a life
less ordinary,” said Al Castignetti, vice president, Sales, Nissan Division, Nissan
North America, Inc. (NNA). “Cube is as much of a Mobile Device as it is an
automobile, something that enhances life like people’s digital devices do. Cube is a
vehicle that people of all ages can fall in love with, even when they don’t love cars.”

Evocative Yet Rational

Though its uniquely styled, asymmetrical body makes a standout statement against
the backdrop of today’s look-alike entry-level vehicles, Cube presents a range of
strong rational arguments for purchase as well.

Along with its projected fuel economy of over 30 mph Highway (equipped with the
CVT transmission, actual EPA estimates not available at this time), Cube offers an
alphabet of standard safety equipment – including an Anti-Lock Braking System
(ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle
Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Tire Pressure Monitoring
System (TPMS), six air bags (including front, side and curtain supplemental air bags)
and front seat Active Head Restraints.

“The new Nissan Cube is not, by any measure, a pure ‘youth car,’ though it
especially meets the needs of young adults’ lives in the sense that it is social,
expressive and practical,” said Castignetti. “And like many entry-level vehicles, Cube
will be purchased by young consumers with the help or influence of their parents.

We believe the combination of value, fuel economy and safety will be especially
reassuring to parents involved in such decisions.”
A “Bulldog in Sunglasses”

The all-new 2009 Nissan Cube builds on the previous generation Cube’s nontraditional
design with an improved stance and an added sense of dynamic
movement. With Cube’s long wheelbase relative to its overall length (a 99.6-inch
wheelbase against a 156.7-inch overall length) and wide track, the wheels, in effect,
are pushed out to each corner – providing exceptional space utilization and a
confident-looking stance that has been compared to a “bulldog in sunglasses.”

“The designers, engineers and planners’ effort and passion in creating the next
generation Cube was unheard of – perhaps only exceeded in recent memory by that
of the Nissan GT-R development team,” said Castignetti. “They were constantly
drawing, cartooning, adding thoughts and ideas, which is how the image of the
bulldog emerged and evolved. This was not a traditional development process.”

Along with its stance, the “incognito canine” look is aided by the wide headlights and
grille treatment, the small but substantial body proportions and the short “tail”
section. In the rear, the bar-type taillights reinforce the wide, anchored feel. The
Cube’s creators also sought to maintain a sense of “pure design,” reducing the
number of character lines to give simplicity and freshness to the styling.

Another unique aspect of the Cube’s exterior is the greenhouse. The A-pillars are
positioned far outward and relatively upright, giving a wider range of forward
visibility. The front door windows utilize a “photo frame” design patterned after a
personal photo frame, while the asymmetrical wraparound side/rear window creates
enhanced rear diagonal visibility for lane changes and reverse parking.

“The ‘geometric circle shape in the square’ rear window is Cube’s signature,” said
Castignetti. “Though there are D-pillars on both sides of the Cube, the visual effect
of the narrower passenger-side pillar is quite remarkable in the overall appearance, a
look aided by the asymmetrical back door.”

Unlike typical top-hinged or clamshell-style utility rear doors, Cube features an easyaccess
refrigerator-style opening, which makes it possible to open or close it even if
parked tight against other cars in parallel parking spaces or when backed in against
a wall or other obstacle.

The back door opens fully when space allows for loading groceries, luggage or largesized
objects – or to a limited-access position (about eight inches) when space is
restricted for retrieving or loading a backpack or other small objects. The one-hand
door handle operation is designed for easy use, even while carrying things in the
other hand or arm.

The 2009 Nissan Cube is available in eight mild-to-wild exterior colors: Chrome
Silver, Steel Grey, Bitter Chocolate, Scarlet Red, Caribbean Blue, Moss Green, Super
Black and White Pearl.

A “Casual Lounge” Interior

The centerpiece of the new Cube’s universal appeal is its “social space” – the
surprisingly roomy interior that offers room for five in a lounge-like comfort. “Cube
is not wasteful in terms of its footprint, carbon or physical. It creates a third space,
in addition to home and school, for interacting with friends. It’s a space that is
highly changeable and adaptable to owners evolving lives, with plenty of room for
personalization,” said Castignetti.

Cube’s clever, inspired and surprisingly open occupant space was conceived with a
“Jacuzzi Curve” layout and “floating meter pod” driver’s area. It combines “casual
lounge”-style passenger seating with a relaxed driving experience. The interactive
interior is anchored by its curve-themed architecture, such as the subtle wavy
shaping of the instrument panel, door panels, seat shapes, armrests and the iconic
circular/oval shapes of elements ranging from air conditioning vents, door pulls and
climate controls.

The comfortable Cube seating includes 6-way manual driver’s seat and 4-way
manual front passenger’s seat, along with a “lounge sofa” style sliding rear bench
seat.

The reclining rear seat can be adjusted to three positions – full rearward (providing
ample legroom), mid-position (3.9 inches forward) or front position (6.0 inches
forward). The rear seat also is positioned higher than the front seats, theater style,
enhancing rear passenger comfort and visibility.

“In some ways, the Cube is like the big cardboard appliance boxes you used to play
in as a kid – they could be clubhouses, race cars, forts, whatever your mood and
imagination wanted at the time,” said Castignetti. “The new Cube’s interior leaves
room for imagination and personalization, yet also starts with a solid functional
purpose.”

Stress-Free Driving, Room For Personalization

Cube’s stress-free driving experience is the result of a number of factors: an
extremely tight 32.8-foot curb-to-curb turning radius, a tall seating position made
possible by the tall body height, an extremely short hood “invisible length” (the area
of the hood panel that the driver is unable to see) and the good rear visibility for
parking and backing up.

“Our studies show that one of the most stressful aspects for young or inexperienced
drivers is parking, particularly parallel parking,” said Castignetti. “Cube is extremely
adaptable to parking environments in terms of its compact exterior dimensions, good
visibility and easy steering.”

Other interior features include the “floating pod” instrument panel with asymmetrical
light blue and white gauges, which are designed to make it easier to distinguish
between the speedometer and the tachometer. The gauge needles “sweep” when
the engine is started to add a sense of flair, while the gradation effect gives a natural
ambience similar to the glow of the white moon and the blue earth. Sub-gauges are
concentrated for enhanced visibility. The three-spoke steering wheel is available
with leather wrapping and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Convenient storage spaces and cup/bottle holders are abundant throughout the Cube
interior – including six cupholders (instrument panel, front center console and rear
armrests) and five bottle holders (door panels and center console). There are also
detachable multi-hooks for holding bags or hats, which can be moved from place to
place – including the instrument panel and rear passenger doors.
The “shelf expression” concept features two “shelves” located on top center and
passenger side of the instrument panel. Not designed for holding objects when the

Cube is in motion, they provide convenient spaces for placing keys, cell phones or
digital music players when the vehicle is parked. The shelves can be personalized
with accessory wood-like trim or shag carpeting. Cube’s “Magic Rubber Bands,”
another clever Cube accessory item, are colorful rubber straps (red, yellow, orange
or silver) that slip into cutouts on the door armrests to secure items such as maps,
nametags, photos, towels or small stuffed animals.

“The interior concept is really about the Cube conforming to the users’ needs, rather
than the other way around – you can put your favorite items anywhere you want,
not where the vehicle tells you to,” said Castignetti. “The designers demanded that
every aspect of the Cube interior be delightful, as well as functional.”

The Cube interior design also incorporates a series of subtle “Water Drop” concentric
circles, inspired by nature and the calming way that ripples move outward from a
drop in water. The circles can be seen in items ranging from the roof headliner to
the cupholders to the climate control design.

A Wide Range of Available Features

Cube’s heating and cooling system provides quiet, efficient operation with easy to
recognize and use knobs and switches. Other standard equipment offered on the
2009 Nissan Cube includes power windows with driver’s side one-touch auto down
feature, Remote Keyless Entry system, power door locks with auto-locking feature,
variable intermittent windshield wipers and intermittent rear window wiper, rear
window defroster with timer, cargo area courtesy light and hooks, 12-volt power
outlet and adjustable front seat belt upper anchors.

Available Cube technology features include Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button
Ignition, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, Rockford Fosgate subwoofer with six
speakers, XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately), Interface
System for iPod® and a rear sonar system.

The Cube interior is offered in two color environments, Wall Gray and Graphite. Wall
Gray, available in a quilted suede-like fabric with special “natural wave” stitching
only, is designed to create a relaxing contrast between the warm, light gray
upholstery and warm off-black interior accents. The warm off-black Graphite
interior, available in two cloth grades, provides a combination of relaxation and more
traditional “driving enjoyment” attitude.

“The Cube interior is a great example of how an inexpensive, high value vehicle can
be done well – quality design, quality materials and the features and equipment that
the user needs with room for personalization, rather than forced customization,” said
Castignetti.

Unexpected Power and Driving Ease

Just as Cube has its own unique take on styling and interior design, the engineering
team took a fresh approach to performance – creating a vehicle that is easy to drive
and easy to handle in traffic.

The emphasis for Cube’s performance credentials is squarely on fun-to-drive, rather
than exhilaration. Cube combines an advanced 122-horsepower 1.8-liter DOHC
inline 4-cylinder with a new-generation Nissan Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable
Transmission) for good acceleration response, smooth operation and fuel efficiency.
Torque is rated at 127 lb-ft.

The MR18DE engine, also utilized in the popular Nissan Versa, is designed to be
powerful and responsive, while also delivering excellent fuel economy. Fuel economy
is projected to be over 30 miles per gallon Highway with the CVT transmission

(actual EPA fuel economy unavailable at this time).
The Xtronic CVT, unlike conventional stepped gear automatics, operates as
essentially “one gear” through use of a belt and two pulleys. By infinitely varying the
working diameters of the two pulleys, the transmission eliminates the “steps”
between gears, resulting in a smoother, more efficient operation by keeping the
engine in its optimum power range under a variety of driving and load conditions.

Cube’s new generation CVT adopts a new CVT oil warmer for enhanced warm-up
performance in cold conditions (reducing friction). It also includes an advanced
Adaptive Shift Control (ASC), which detects the driving situation and style (economy,
normal, sports) and communicates with the engine control – helping optimize both
fuel economy and driving pleasure.

The 2009 Cube is also offered with a 6-speed manual transmission with a new shift
control system, triple cone synchronizers (1st and 2nd gear) and reverse synchronizer
system. The 6-speed manual is available with Cube 1.8 and Cube 1.8 S models.

“The Cube has a strong power-to-weight ratio, which combined with the advanced
CVT, gives it a surprisingly spirited driving feel. Throw in the small turning radius,
good outward visibility and the smooth suspension feel and you have the perfect
formula for navigating through traffic with confidence and ease,” said Castignetti.

Cube’s suspension combines an independent MacPherson strut front design with
stabilizer bar with a torsion beam rear with integrated stabilizer bar. Its
comfortable, flat ride is a result, in part, of the “Ripple Control” shock absorbers and
the high body stiffness. Other standard equipment includes vehicle-speed-sensitive
electric power-assisted steering, power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes and 15-
inch wheels with P195/60R15 tires.

Cube’s long list of standard safety features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag
System (AABS), seat-mounted driver and front-passenger side-impact supplemental
air bags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front and
rear-seat outboard occupant head protection.

Cube also offers standard front-seat Active Head Restraints, Tire Pressure Monitoring
System (TPMS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System
(TCS), along with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force
Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

Three Well-Equipped Models

The 2009 Nissan Cube is offered in three well-equipped models: Cube 1.8, Cube 1.8
S and Cube 1.8 SL.

A full range of dealer accessories allows buyers to expand their Cube world with
items such as an illumination kit with 20 selectable colors, illuminated kick plates,
rear cargo organizer, pet blankets, wheels, aero kits and more.

“We know that self-expression is important to many potential Cube buyers, so we’ve
provided the room and accessorize to help with personalization,” said Castignetti.
“However, Cube is far from a blank or empty canvas that buyers must equip on their
own. Cube is a different kind of box than other vehicles on the market, with an
abundance of personality right off the assembly line.”

Smart Simplicity

“Economical, affordable, functional and adaptable, the 2009 Nissan Cube offers an
unmatched sense of ‘smart simplicity.’ It builds on a Cube DNA of distinctive spirit
and non-automotive style, and adds an enhanced level of humanistic charm and
clever design,” said Castignetti. “If cars could talk, Cube would be likely to say, ‘Nice
to meet you.’ Come this spring, America gets its chance.”

2010 Nissan Cube

Nissan has announced the 2010 Nissan Cube, the third generation of their weird looking car launched in 1998. “The new Cube is designed for people who imagine a life less ordinary, who have grown tired of the never-ending pursuit of faster, more powerful, more outrageously styled cars,” said Yosuke Iwasa, Segment Chief Product Specialist. “The quieter, more harmonious qualities of the Cube have attracted interest not only among young people, but for those in every walk of life. While carrying forward the concept of the original Cube, this latest edition has advanced significantly, including offering far greater comfort.”

As you can probably imagine, power and aerodynamics are not these car’s main attractions, the Cube being offered with a 1.5-liter HR15DE engine, e-4WD system featuring standard XTRONIC CVT with Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) which Nissan claims offers an improved fuel economy. The interior however, is very versatile and funky, with an open cabin, conceived with the image of a Jacuzzi, curve-shaped instrument panel, “Fine Vision” instrumentation, “skylight”-style glass panel roof with shoji-style shade to diffuse sunlight and “water drop” ripple design motif in cupholders and other cabin details.

The new Nissan Cube will go on sale in Japan on November 26 (prices ranging between $15,000 and $20,000), in the spring of 2009 the United States will get it, while European customers will be able to place their orders starting with fall 2009. Check out more photo after the jump.

2009 Nissan 370Z - Official Photos - Car News

Nissan releases official photos of its redesigned two-seat sports car.

The lighter and more powerful Nissan 370Z coupe is finally here, making its debut at the 2008 L.A. auto show prior to going on sale in the fall of 2009.

Bigger Engine, Smaller Package

The big news, as evidenced by the name change from 350Z to 370Z, is the 3.7-liter V-6 now under the hood. The bigger engine, which produces 332 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, will power a new Z that is about 90 pounds lighter than the one it replaces—a perfect recipe for fun. Icing on the cake are two new transmission options: a six-speed manual with an optional rev-matching feature that automatically blips the throttle on downshifts, and a seven-speed automatic—the same unit that was recently introduced on Infiniti’s G37.

The new Z is visibly wider—by 1.1 inches—than the car it replaces, with increased front and rear tracks. It is 2.7 inches shorter overall, with a wheelbase abbreviated by 3.4 inches. Its design incorporates the now-familiar Nissan boomerang-style headlights and taillights, as well as Z-branded side marker lights. The cantilevered roofline is borrowed from big brother GT-R. Weight distribution of 54/46 front/rear has been maintained from the 350Z, and a new double-wishbone front suspension design is complimented by a lighter and stiffer four-link rear. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard, with 19-inchers available as part of a Sport package.

Nissan has unveiled the new third-generation Nissan Cube with launch events taking place today in Japan, United States and Europe. The new Nissan Cube for the global markets keeps its iconic “cubic” styling from previous generations which is basically boxy and boring (some may find it attractive since it’s ‘different’).

Sales of the new 2010 Nissan Cube will begin on Nov. 26 in Japan. The North American market will get their allocation in spring of 2009 followed by the European market in fall of 2009. Pricing begins at 1,449,000 yen ($14,968 USD) for the 2WD model and 1,687,350 yen ($17,433 USD) for the 4WD model.

We have yet to hear anything about powertrain and other technical specifications - but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out. Until then follow the jump for a list of ‘Key Features.’

Motor Trend Car of the Year: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Its official, Japan’s Godzilla has taken over. The Nissan GT-R has been announced as the Motor Trend Car of the Year! We all know the Nissan GT-R is one of the most talked about sports, ahhh— “super-cars” this year. While the GT-R has broken records up and down the automotive performance spectrum it has truly been a benchmark setter for cars yet to come.

Remember when the BMW 3-Series use to win all of those awards year after year. Everyone wanted to follow suit and build a car the modeled after the BMW. Well, this time, I am not sure if many auto makers will be able to follow the GT-R or let-alone, keep up with it. Of course you can find a few cars to outperform the GT-R in a straight line but would be hard pressed to find a production vehicle to top its Nurburgring record.

Performance and transmission failures aside, the Nissan GT-R has changed the practically of the automotive world. This is a car similar to what we thought of the BMW M3 to be, jump in it to commute to work, load up a full set of golf clubs to play with your buddies, and lay down some serious whoop-ass on the track any place and anytime.

2009 Nissan GT-R Named Motor Trend Car of the Year
Motor Trend has announced the winner of its 2009 Car of the Year award and this year the award goes to the 2009 Nissan GT-R.

Motor Trend had this to say about the 2009 GT-R:

"The GT-R puts Nissan on a map that thus far only designated Maranello, Sant’ Agata, Munich, and Stuttgart as points of interest,” said Motor Trend editor Ron Kiino. ”Well, it’s time to stick a tack on Tochigi. In the kingdom of supercars, the GT-R positively belongs. Be it comparing 0-to-60 sprints, quarter-mile times, 60-to-0 braking, or lateral acceleration, the GT-R is one of the world’s best.”

"Plainly put: No Nissan has ever been as formidable or as awesome as the GT-R. More significant, no other 2009 contender crushes our criteria like the GT-R. For that, it wholeheartedly deserves our Golden Calipers."
