2010 Nissan LEAF EV

Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn today unveiled the Japanese automaker’s new zero-emission electric-car - the Nissan LEAF. The model is scheduled to be launched in late 2010 in Japan, United States and Europe.

The medium-sized hatchback, which comfortably seats five adults, is powered by lithium ion cells that power the 80 kW (107-hp) electric motor with a peak torque of 208 lb-ft. On a full-charge, the Nissan LEAF allows for a driving range of 100 miles with a top speed of 87 mph.

Charging time takes approximately 8 hours on a standard 200V outlet. However, buyers can opt for the DC 50kW quick-charger, which recharges the battery up to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

Press Release:

NISSAN UNVEILS “LEAF” - THE WORLD’S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR DESIGNED FOR AFFORDABILITY AND REAL-WORLD REQUIREMENTS
Event ushers in a new era for Nissan and a new era for mobility

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled Nissan LEAF, the world’s first affordable, zero-emission car. Designed specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, Nissan LEAF is a medium-size hatchback that comfortably seats five adults and has a range of more than 160km (100 miles) to satisfy real-world consumer requirements.

NISSAN LEAF
Slated for launch in late 2010 in Japan, the United States, and Europe, Nissan LEAF ushers in a new era of mobility - the zero-emission era. The car is the embodiment of Nissan’s radical, transformative vision for the future and the culmination of decades of investment and research.

“Nissan LEAF is a tremendous accomplishment - one in which all Nissan employees can take great pride,” said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “We have been working tirelessly to make this day a reality - the unveiling of a real-world car that has zero - not simply reduced - emissions. It’s the first step in what is sure to be an exciting journey - for people all over the world, for Nissan and for the industry.”

Key characteristics of the LEAF include:

1. Zero-emission power train and platform
2. Affordable pricing
3. Distinctive design
4. Real-world range autonomy - 160km (100 miles)
5. Connected Mobility: Advanced intelligent transportation (IT) system

The “LEAF” name is a significant statement about the car itself. Just as leaves purify the air in nature, so Nissan LEAF purifies mobility by taking emissions out of the driving experience. Pricing details will be announced closer to start of sales in late 2010; however, the company expects the car to be competitively priced in the range of a well-equipped C-segment vehicle. Additionally, Nissan LEAF is expected to qualify for an array of significant local, regional and national tax breaks and incentives in markets around the world. As an added benefit, because the vehicle has less mechanical complexity than a traditional gasoline-powered car, Nissan LEAF is designed to be friendly to the wallet as well as to the environment.

ZERO-EMISSION MOBILITY
Nissan LEAF is powered by laminated compact lithium-ion batteries, which generate power output of over 90kW, while its electric motor delivers 80kW/280Nm. This ensures a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that is in keeping with what consumers have come to expect from traditional, gasoline-powered automobiles.

Unlike internal-combustion engine (ICE) equipped vehicles, Nissan LEAF’s power train has no tail pipe, and thus no emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases. A combination of Nissan LEAF’s regenerative braking system and innovative lithium-ion battery packs enables the car to deliver a driving range of more than 160km (100 miles) on one full charge*. (*US LA4 mode)

Extensive consumer research demonstrates that this range satisfies the daily driving requirements of more than 70% of the world’s consumers who drive cars.

And, Nissan’s approach makes charging easy and convenient. Nissan LEAF can be charged up to 80% of its full capacity in just under 30 minutes with a quick charger. Charging at home through a 200V outlet is estimated to take approximately eight hours - ample time to enable an overnight refresh for consumer and car alike.

REAL-WORLD CAR
The engineers and designers behind Nissan LEAF worked to create a competitively priced real-world car that would enable Nissan to lead mobility into the zero-emission era. To ensure comfort, spaciousness and cargo capacity, Nissan LEAF employs a completely new chassis and body layout.

“Our car had to be the world’s first, medium-size, practical EV that motorists could afford and would want to use every day. And that’s what we’ve created. The styling will identify not only Nissan LEAF but also the owner as a participant in the new era of zero-emission mobility,” said Masato INOUE, Product Chief Designer.

DISTINCTIVE DESIGN
Even the smallest details can yield tremendous effect.

Nissan LEAF’s frontal styling is characterized by a sharp, upright V-shaped design featuring long, up-slanting light-emitting diode (LED) headlights that employ a blue internal reflective design that announces, “This car is special.” But the headlights do more than make a statement. They are also designed to cleverly split and redirect airflow away from the door mirrors, thus reducing wind noise and drag. And, the headlights provide yet one more benefit in that they consume just 10 percent of the electricity of conventional lamps, which helps Nissan LEAF to achieve its world-class range autonomy.

Through bright trim colors inside, Nissan LEAF creates a pleasing and stylish cabin environment. An environmentally friendly “blue earth” color theme originates from the Aqua Globe body color of Nissan LEAF’s introductory model. This theme is carried into the interior through blue dashboard highlights and instrument illumination.

CONNECTED MOBILITY IT SYSTEM
Nissan LEAF employs an exclusive advanced IT system. Connected to a global data center, the system can provide support, information, and entertainment for drivers 24 hours a day.

The dash-mounted monitor displays Nissan LEAF’s remaining power - or “reachable area” - in addition to showing a selection of nearby charging stations.

Another state-of-the-art feature is the ability to use mobile phones to turn on air-conditioning and set charging functions - even when Nissan LEAF is powered down. An on-board remote-controlled timer can also be pre-programmed to recharge batteries.

“The IT system is a critical advantage,” says Tooru ABE, Chief Product Specialist. “We wanted this vehicle to be a partner for the driver and an enhancement for the passengers. We also wanted this vehicle to help create a zero-emission community, and these IT features will help make that possible.”

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ZERO-EMISSION MOBILITY AND ECO-FRIENDLY INNOVATION
Nissan LEAF is a critical first step in establishing the era of zero-emission mobility; however, Nissan recognizes that internal-combustion engine (ICE) technologies will play a vital role in global transportation for decades to come. Because of this, Nissan is implementing its zero-emission vision through a holistic approach, which provides consumers a comprehensive range of eco-friendly technologies from which to choose.

For some consumers, Nissan LEAF will be the perfect match, and the only car they will ever need. For others, Nissan LEAF will be a logical addition to the family fleet - the optimal choice for the daily commute, for example.

While zero-emission is the ultimate goal, the company is committed to ongoing innovation in eco-friendly technologies that increase efficiency and reduce emissions. As a result, Nissan offers a comprehensive suite of automotive technologies, including CVT, Idle Stop, HEV, Clean Diesel, and ongoing research and investment in FCV technology.

WORLDWIDE PARTNERS
Zero-emission mobility programs under the banner of the Renault-Nissan Alliance include partnerships with countries such as the UK and Portugal, local governments in the Japan and the USA, and other sectors, for a total of nearly 30 partnerships worldwide.

In these partnerships major efforts focus on three areas:

1. Development of a comprehensive charging infrastructure through public and private investment,
2. Incentives and subsidies from local, regional, and national governments, and
3. Public education on the individual and societal benefits of zero-emissions mobility.

ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLE PRODUCTION
Nissan LEAF is the first in the company’s forthcoming line of EVs and is a major milestone in the realization of the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s vision for zero-emission mobility. The first of Nissan’s EV’s will be manufactured at Oppama, Japan, with additional capacity planned for Smyrna, Tennessee, USA. Meanwhile, lithium-ion batteries are being produced in Zama, Japan, with additional capacity planned for the USA, the UK and Portugal, and other sites for investment are under study around the world.

Nissan Qazana could go electric in 2013

Over the weekend, we saw Nissan unveil its first mass-production electric-vehicle due out in the U.S. as early as next year. Nissan, which has been very vocal about its electric-future recently, said yesterday that it wants to mass market its electric vehicles globally by 2012.

According to report by AutoCar, an all-electric version of the upcoming Qazana crossover and a production version of the mini Nuvu electric-concept is a possibility for 2013.

The Qazana, which was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, will be produced at Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the UK.

A source said that Nissan has plans of building seven lithium-ion battery production lines around the world, each with a capacity to produce 50,000 lithium-ion batteries annually.

The production version of the Nissan Qazana will debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

5,000 Nissan LEAF EVs coming to U.S. next year, onboard black box will monitor recharging habits

Nissan announced today that it is committed to an early launch of 5,000 units of its new Nissan Leaf electric-car in the Unite States late next year. The plan will require Nissan North America to gear up to sell the Leaf two years ahead of its mass-market launch, said Nissan.

According to Nissan’s director of product planning and strategy Mark Perry, the first 5,000 U.S. units of the Leaf will take part in a 5-market study of the electric-vehicle’s driving habits. He said that Nissan wants to study how consumers drive and recharge their vehicles.

“We’re moving fast,” Perry says. “This is not a test to determine whether or not it’s going to work. This is the beginning of mass marketing.”

The 5,000 customers who purchase the car must agree to have their recharging habits monitored by a black box installed in the car for the first two years of ownership. Perry said that Nissan will have requirements for the first 5,000 Leaf customers to make sure that their habits can provide the automaker with meaningful data.

Pricing of the Nissan Leaf will be announced closer to launch.

Refresher: Power comes from a 107-hp electric-motor that runs on power supplied by lithium ion cells. On a full-charge, the Nissan LEAF allows for a driving range of 100 miles with a top speed of 87 mph. A full charge takes up to 8 hours on a standard 200V outlet. Buyers can opt for the DC 50kW quick-charger, which recharges the battery up to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

Nissan Motor Co engineers are hurrying up to squeeze out another mile or two per gallons out of the automaker’s lineup in order to win customers who come looking for federal Cars Allowance Rebate System (CARS) or cash for clunkers money.

“We want as many of our products as possible to pop up on the shopping list,” Nissan North America spokesman Brian Brockman told Automotive News.

Vice president of Nissan Technical Center North America in suburban Detroit admits that there is little Nissan can do to dramatically increase the fuel-economy of their cars in such a short amount of time; however a number of quick changes are possible, especially if the government decides to extend the program.

The CARS program is scheduled to run until November, or when the $1 billion runs out.

Apple iPhone

Need to check the battery level of your electric-vehicle? There’s an app for that. Need to see how hot is inside your vehicle so you can turn on the AC before you get inside? Well, there’s an app for that too - thanks to Nissan. Along with its new electric-vehicle platform announced yesterday, Nissan demonstrated a new iPhone app at its facility in Yokosuka, Japan that links to its electric-car’s IT system to check the charge status of the on-board lithium-ion battery.

Using the app, owners will be able to dial into their electric car and monitor the charging of their cars. The app could prove useful when electric-cars are parked at public charging stations and owners want to check in and see what the status of their battery-level is before getting back to driving.

Along with monitoring battery levels, owners will be able to see other detailed information such as the remaining time required for the full charge and the approximate cost they will have to pay at a charging station.

Other features include checking the interior temperature of the car and allowing users to turn on the air conditioning system to cool the inside before they get in.

Nissan’s new electric-car is scheduled to debut on August 2nd.

After having some server difficulties we’re back up and running so we’re going to continue wrapping up the day.

2009 Nissan 370Z test-drive update: As we were waiting for our database to get back up and running we decided to head out and do a little photo shoot for the 2009 Nissan 370Z. Here are some teaser photos that we’ll be posting along with the full review next week.

As for Ivan Gutierrez question: “Wait, this is a stupid question but what is under the square lift up thing? Radio and Climate controls? Does it go into the dash when opened.”

No - it has nothing inside except a little storage area. Sadly, it doesn’t go into the dash and flips outward. Check out the images below.

2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster

You might have noticed how enamored we are with the new Nissan 370Z coupe, a car which we’ve called “the best sports car on the planet for the money.”

Now we now how much that goodness will cost in roadster form. When it goes on sale in September, the 370Z Roadster with a six-speed manual will start at $37,690, while the seven-cog automatic model will command $38,990. The coupe carries a base price of $30,650 with a manual and $31,950 with an automatic.

The Touring model adds a Bose stereo with XM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, aluminum pedals, and heated and cooled leather seats. Plan to pay $41,240 for a manual and $42,540 for the automatic.

Sport and Navigation packages are also available for the 370Z Touring. The former stickers at $2800 and packs unique 19-inch Rays wheels wearing Bridgestone Potenza tires, tougher brakes, a limited-slip differential, and SynchroRev Match on manual-transmission cars. The $1850 Navigation package adds a 9.3-gig hard drive, USB music connectivity, and, of course, a navigation system. Black Cherry paint costs $500.

So the 332-hp 370Z Roadster will be cheaper than the $52,475 BMW Z4 sDrive35i convertible, the $48,325 Audi TTS roadster, and the $57,495 Porsche Boxster S, all cars the Nissan trumps in the power department. But will it follow the coupe into our hearts and become the best droptop sports car for the money? We can’t wait to slide behind the wheel and find out.

2009-Nissan-370Z-SRM-1

Throttle blips make every shift smooth.

Nissan’s SynchroRev Match (SRM) combines the tactile reward of shifting your own gears with the perfectly orchestrated downshifts of an automated manual or an automatic.

In most cars with a manual transmission, a smooth downshift requires a blip of the throttle to match the engine rpm with the speed of the lower gear. And shifting during braking requires the one-foot, two-pedal technique known as heel-and-toeing; your right foot blips the throttle while at the same time pushing the brake pedal. It can be harder to get right than health-care reform. But Nissan’s system, part of the Sport package on manual-transmission 370Zs and standard on the NISMO version, takes care of the rev matching for you.

Putting adventure on the table.

Sushi chefs know that when preparing fugu—the potentially lethal, raw puffer fish—there is a fine line between delivering a tingly taste sensation and committing homicide. The same dangers apply when attempting to improve an already great sports car such as the 370Z. Nissan’s performance division, NISMO—a portmanteau word concocted from Nissan Motorsports—is hoping that the NISMO Z leaves you tingly rather than beat to death.

We don’t have room to list all the differences between the NISMO and a regular Z, but here’s our CliffsNotes version: stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, firmer dampers, 7.1 inches longer, 0.1 inch lower. Plus, the VQ-series V-6 makes 18 more horsepower, 350 in all. Nissan added two body dampers—long shock absorbers mounted transversely to the body’s underside—to quell vibrations. And in case you forget what you’re driving, the NISMO moniker is scattered about in 16 places on the car. Curb weight is similar to that of lesser Zs, at 3340 pounds.

Coupe-like performance and a stronger structure—and it looks fantastic, too.

We usually assess convertibles in terms of structural rigidity, the square root of all vehicle dynamics. Rubbery bones don’t enhance transient response, and there’s the disconcerting phenomenon of dashboard and steering column jiggling to the beat of slightly different sambas.

But that’s not the biggest concern of a team convertibilizing a fastback coupe. They’re wondering whether their baby will be seductive. Makes sense, right? After all, a guy surveying the traffic at a hookup bar isn’t thinking about structural rigidity (other than his own).

Sushi chefs know that when preparing blowfish, orfugu, there’s a fine line between paralyzing your patron and giving them the desired tingly sensation that comes from ingesting a tiny bit of the fish’s deadly poison. Making a great car better needs a similar level of finesse. Nissan’s performance division, NISMO, has attempted to do just that with the 370Z. The question is, have they given the Z-car extra pizzazz or gone too far?

Flashier Duds, Reflashed Engine

The car clearly looks different, being 7.2 inches longer than the base Z. About six of those seven inches reside in a new nose, while the remaining inch and change is in the redesigned rear bumper that comes complete with diffuser. Put the NISMO side-by-side with a standard Z and the Adrian Brody schnoz certainly stands out. The redesigned rocker panels make the Z look as though it might be wider, but that’s just a visual trick; it’s the same width. Shorter springs lower the NISMO by 0.1 inch. A larger wing that does a thorough job of blocking rearward visibility resides on the rear hatch. The wing might look import tuner-y, but Nissan claims all of the body modifications create no additional drag and generate 18 pounds of downforce over the front axle and 35 pounds over the rear at 75 mph.

Underhood, there’s a similar VQ37VHR V-6 that powers the regular Z, but an ECU reflash and a specially tuned, larger-diameter dual exhaust increases the power to 350 at 7400 rpm. That’s 18 more horses than the standard Z, delivered 400 revs higher. Torque is up by 6 lb-ft to 276.

Unfortunately our test car wasn’t properly broken in when we had the opportunity to run the numbers on it. The performance was good—0-to-60-mph in 5.2 seconds and 13.7 seconds through the quarter-mile at 105 mph—but worse than we have seen in the new 370Z. Those figures certainly didn’t reflect an 18-hp gain. It has been our experience that the VQ-series engines perform better as they age (insert your own cougar joke here) and we feel that the NISMO, after a lengthy break-in period, will match or better 0–60 in 4.8 seconds and 13.4 seconds for the quarter, our best times so far for a 370Z.

2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

As our First Drive revealed, Infiniti's first folding tin-top is a decent performer and markedly more attractive in appearance than its Germanic competition. And now that pricing has been revealed, the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible just got a bit more desirable. The seven-speed, automatic-equipped model starts at $43,850, while the six-speed manual model (6MT in Infiniti parlance) with its standard Sport package comes in at $43,900 (both excludes $865 destination and handling). Just for comparison's sake, the BMW 328i starts at $44,550, while the hotter, twin-turbocharged 335i commands $50,700 for the privilege.
Package pricing is listed in detail below the fold, but for $3,250, the automatic model can be outfitted with the Premium setup, while opting for the Sport 6MT saves you $200 on the same package. Navigation and Technology packages will set you back $1,850 and $1,150, respectively, but if it came time to use our money, we'd just tick the box for the Sport ($1,350 with Premium, $1,550 without) and Performance Tire and Package for $650, along with the "R Spec High Friction" brake pads ($370). Make the jump to start specing your G37 Convertible before it goes on sale June 19th.

Nissan working on Nurburgring edition of the 370Z

According to reports by European media, Nissan is working on a special limited-edition Nurburgring version of the Nissan 370Z to pay tribute to the race-prepped 370Z that raced during the 24-Hour Race. No power upgrades are reported for the Nurburgring edition, meaning the limited-edition 370Z continues to run on its 332-hp 3.7L V6.

So what’s all the Nurbugring-ness about? Nissan will throw on a set of 19-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels and you can expect some Nurburgring track logos on the seats and the floor-mats.

Nissan will build on 80 units of the yellow 370Z Nurburgring edition. Pricing starts at the U.S. dollar equivalent of $71,275. All 80 buyers will receive a bonus card worth $212 of public track days at the famous Nordschleife.

Nissan reportedly preparing Nürburgring edition 370Z for the European market

While Nissan has been trying to master the Nürburgring in its flagship GT-R supercar, it was the one-rung-down 370Z which the Japanese automaker fielded at the track's 24-hour race last month. To commemorate the occasion, Nissan is reportedly preparing to drop a special commemorative edition of its 370Z on the European market.
Although photos are still unavailable at this time, the Nissan 370Z Nürburgring edition is apparently set to be differentiated by a set of 19-inch OZ Racing alloys wrapped in Dunlop rubber, a sport exhaust system and the requisite batch of special badges. Only 80 examples will be made, each individually numbered, and the model will apparently only be available in yellow. And just to sweeten the deal, Nissan is throwing in a gift card good for over $200 of track time on the Nordschleife.

Nissan GT-R most expensive to insure, Hyundai Santa-Fe least expensive

Insure.com has just announced the Top 20 Least Expensive Vehicles to Insure; however, the enthusiast in us is focused on the most expensive vehicle to insure. The most expensive vehicle to insure, which comes as no surprise to us, is the Nissan GT-R.

Nissans “multi-performance supercar” comes in at an average annual premium of $2,533.

“Owners of the GT-R buy it for power and speed, and their driving habits are often reflected in frequent and expensive insurance claims,” says Insure.com. “GT-R owners who are young with less-than-spotless driving records could easily see their annual car insurance premiums zoom to several thousand dollars.”

The least expensive vehicle to insure is the Hyundai Santa Fe coming in at $832.

Nissan will steer clear of hybrid look for first EV

TOKYO--Nissan Motors wants a bold design for its upcoming electric vehicle--one that doesn't make it look like a hybrid.

The goal is a look that screams green but stands apart from the wedge-shaped silhouette that has come to signify environmentally friendly driving in the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrids.

"We need some kind of difference so that when people see our car, they will realize this is an EV, not a hybrid," Nissan chief designer Shiro Nakamura told Automotive News.

Nissan has not released pictures of the car, which is scheduled to go on sale next year. But its new styling cues include:

  • No grille, to underscore the electric drivetrain
  • A low hood enabled by the lack of an engine
  • A visible recharging plug at the nose of the car
  • A profile that is flowing, instead of triangular

Godzilla as Snow Monster - GT-R dons Blizzaks, runs Nordschleife

All the dumb, fun crap we ever did involving cars and snow while growing up has been rendered fully obsolete by the GT-R freaks at Autohaus Brömmler, who threw a set of Blizzak LM-25 performance winters on their project car and then took it to the snow-covered 'Ring. And here we thought handbrake turns in Dad's old Subaru GL wagon after a fresh snowfall were a gas. Watch through to the end, lest you miss the snowy donut conclusion. Godzilla? Nah... more like a Wampa. Follow the jump to drink in the awesome. Thanks, Franz!

Formula Drift Long Beach Highlights Video

Formula D or Formula Drift is my new friend. I have only been into drifting since the Fast the Furious Tokyo Drift movie came out. I know that is ridiculously lame! But anyway, Formula Drift is just awesome to watch because all of the cars are “out of control” but “in control”, if you know what I mean. Anywho, check out WreckedMagazine’s latest video of the Formula Drift Long Beach event below.

WreckedMagazine Video Description:

A great edit from Will Roegge of Formula Drift Long Beach. A two minute piece to the background of Tokyo Police Club - Be Good (RAC Remix). A few great clips include Tommy Suell drifting and his door swings open and Doug Van Den Brink’s tire barrier smash, don’t miss either of this exciting shots deep into the video.

Ventross tweaks the Nissan GT-R

When the GT-R first found its way into customer hands, Nissan actually included an image in the instruction manual recommending owners not modify their car with oversize spoilers and ridiculous body kits – more for the sake of taste rather than functionality. Naturally this suggestion has been ignored by the aftermarket scene, although for the most part visual tweaks have been rather impressive with the latest kit from Ventross being no exception.
Nissan GT-R-1Nissan GT-R-2Usually specializing in German cars, America tuning firm Vorsteiner has established the Ventross brand specifically for Japanese offerings, following up last year’s Lexus IS-F with the infamous Nissan GT-R. The package comprises a dry carbon front chin spoiler, new front intakes which funnel air onto the brakes as well as adding downforce, a lighter carbon fibre boot lid with spoiler and rear diffuser in the same material.
The new boot lid alone is almost 50 percent lighter than the standard part which it replaces, meaning the Ventross will outperform a factory GT-R with no engine modifications at all.
Also available are three-piece forged aluminium six-spoke wheels in both 19- and 20-inch packages.

Nissan 370Z Roadster rendering

It will likely take a year for Nissan to replace the full 350Z line with the 370Z, so it won't be until the 2010 model year that the 370Z roadster will be at dealerships. There shouldn't be too many surprises from the design of the ragtop version. Just like the current roadster, the lines will remain relatively the same as the coupe. The 370Z roadster will feature a fully automatic fabric roof and has been structurally reinforced to be much stiffer than the current car. The basic (...)

It's officially official: the new 370Z is out. As expected, the new Z car is lighter, stronger, shorter and faster than its predecessor. Coupe sales will begin in North America by January 2009, followed by a new 370Z Roadster for the 2010 model year. Exact pricing has not been confirmed, but Nissan says it will remain around $30,000. Compared to the 350Z's four trim lineup (regular, Enthusiast, Touring and Grand Touring), the new generation Z will only be offered in two versions: 370Z (...)

Old-School Infatuations: 350Z vs. G35, Life’s Harder Choices

A loyal reader of AutomotiveAddits.com wanted to chime-in and send us a small article about his so-called “harder choices in life”. Reminiscing like this gets our mind off of the recession and hardship in America for at least a few minutes. Since the introduction of the new Nissan 370Z it has people thinking that their current sports or GT car is far inferior to a new, relatively inexpensive, sports car that can push 60 mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds. Here is Cole Sliven’s short story:

350Z Vs G35, Life’s Harder Choices

I’ve been a big fan of sports cars for quite some time. Ever since the 300z came out with it’s sweet body style, dual exhaust and a twin turbo model, this car quickly become the car I could see myself driving. I remember test driving a non-turbo model about 5 years ago. Even without the turbo, this car had a fair amount of torque and the drive felt great behind the wheel. I remember the Dealer letting me take it out for a test drive without him coming along. That was kind of a mistake on his part. I took it for a cruise to an open parking lot, did a couple donuts and the drove back. I loved this car, it was a sweet ride. The price was a just outside my budget and the Dealer wouldn’t come down much so I had to take a pass on making the purchase. Since that day I have had the itch to once again take a Z car for another cruise.

Another car has made its way into the spot light; the Infiniti G35 or newer G37. Since this car came out, I have now grown uncertain of which car I’d rather be cruising. Which car would you choose? Would it be the newer 350Z or 370Z designed for performance and style. The only thing I don’t like about it is it has no backseats while the G35 does. In 2005, Infiniti bumped the power of the G35 from 260 hp to 298 hp in all Coupes and sedans with manual transmissions. The newer G37 has 330hp. The engine available in the 350Z is a 3.5-liter V6 and 370Z is a 3.7-liter. This engine cranks out 306 hp and 268 pound-feet of torque and 332hp in the 370Z so you’re getting a little bit more out of the Z than you would the G35 or G37.

Today, my personal choice between these two would be the Infiniti G35 since I could use the extra couple seats for additional passengers. If I was a single guy I may rather go with the Nissan. However the G35/G37 also has a slick design as well as a comfortable interior.

Infiniti revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show the first ever convertible model in the G line-up. The car doesn't stray much from the G37's original recipe, and it carries over the coupe's platform and engine. The biggest addition to the car is the extra sky available form the folding hardtop. Sales of the topless G will begin in spring of 2009. The G37 convertible is powered by the same 3.7-liter V6 engine as the coupe version that delivers 325 hp @ 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 267 (...)

Infiniti developing new crossover, hybrid for 2010

Take a quick glance at Infiniti's line-up in the United States. What's the most glaring omission? A range-topping luxury sedan or possibly a version of the GT-R to serve as it's sporting halo? Not according to John Capps, chairman of the Infiniti National Dealer Advisory Board, who says Infiniti dealers are pushing hard for another entry into the same near luxury segment where the G37 already competes along with another luxury crossover model. It seems that the EX, the automaker's latest CUV, is not selling up to expectations against rivals such as the Lexus RX-series due to its limited utility.
Up next for the automaker, though, are replacements for the M-series sedan and QX full-size SUV, which we surmise may come from a new platform since it's currently based on the Nissan Titan, which is slated to be replaced by a version of the Dodge Ram in a few years. On the green front, Infiniti is also said to have a hybrid on the way for 2010, though we're short on details as to which platform(s) will be so equipped.

Infiniti concept cometh with Louis Vuitton luggage

Nissan recently launched the Infiniti brand in Europe, but as the automaker discovered when it began selling it's premium wares in the U.S., there's more to competing with the Germans than just building quality automobiles.
In an attempt to bolster its image abroad, Infiniti has tapped Louis Vuitton to produce a bespoke line of luggage for a yet-to-be-disclosed concept bound for the Geneva Motor Show. Infiniti's press release (below the fold) doesn't divulge much about the concept, only saying that it "will be a celebration of Infiniti and its [20-year history] as a creator of performance cars. But equally it will be an inspiring exploration into the brand's future."
We haven't been able to get a hold of an Infiniti spokesperson for a comment, so speculation about the concept begins below

Infiniti EX Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Award for 2008 and 2009

Affording “superior overall crash protection among vehicles in its class,” the all-new Infiniti EX35 has earned an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety TOP SAFETY PICK award for 2008 and 2009, their highest honor. In describing the Institute’s tough award criteria, “intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and rapid addition of electronic stability control (ESC),” Institute president Adrian Lund praised the EX35 as a “leader in its class for state-of-the-art-safety,” specifically mentioning Infiniti’s inclusion of Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) - an ESC system - on every EX35. According to Institute research, ESC helps drivers maintain control in the worst situation - loss of control at high speed - lowering the risk of a fatal single-vehicle crash by about half and the risk of a fatal rollover crash by as much as 80 percent.
